Windsor Heights to add Bike Hub

Windsor Heights is planning to add a bike hub on the trail west of Wal-Mart. They are considering turning a vacant auto shop into a hub for cyclists. Including locker rooms, patio, a restaurant and a bike repair station.

The former Sears Auto Center sits just west of the Wal-Mart on 73rd Street, where the Walnut Creek and Clive Greenbelt trails meet.

The 9,080-square-foot building sits on 3.2 acres near the Walnut Creek and Clive Greenbelt trails. An additional trail also links to the two to the Urbandale bike trail system. There is plenty of parking and easy sidewalk access to nearby businesses and Colby Park.

There are two other sites being considered – Colby Park and the University Ave business district near 66th.

Other cities either have hubs or are considering them. Ankeny is building a trail hub on the southern end of the High Trestle Trail. The Ankeny Market & Pavilion will include parking and restrooms in a park setting with two open-air pavilions that can host farmers markets and other summertime events.

Des Moines already has a hub near the riverwalk downtown at Court and Water street. Yoga is held there during the summer.
